TAIWAN TRIP 2007!
DAY 1:: 14 May 2007 (Mon) [weather:: sunny] [location:: singapore/ 士林夜市]
yippee! taking a break from work (& singapore) - i'm flying to TAIWAN for a good 10-day trip! =) highly-anticipated been planning for this since more than a month ago heex. the participants are - my sister, Sharon, Yih Hong! (the 2 buddies from the tokyo trip last year)
took a cab to changi airport in the late morning Fabian & my sister's friend, Li Ou came to send us off lunched at mac before rushing to board the jetstar plane at 1pm wah, it's really a damn BUDGET flight can my knees were pasted against the front seat, there was no tv, no drinks or warm towel served god. & there was a new airport regulation - no liquid items to be brought onto the plane which meant that none of us had water to drink throughout the flight (unless you are dumb enough to purchase the overpriced water from the crew) anyway, what can you expect out of a $270 two-way air ticket to taiwan?
5.40pm - arrived at taipei taoyuan airport! =D boarded a coach to our hotel - 乔合大饭店 (deja vu hotel - what a name!) it's located at 忠孝复兴 (zhong xiao fu xing) it took quite a while for us to find it cos not many have heard of it the 4 of us SQUEEZED into a room for 2, oops. save cost mahx
we spent our first night at taipei eating through 士林夜市 (shilin night
market) we tried a whole lot of goodies - 豪大大鸡排, 蚵仔煎, 臭豆腐, 超大香肠 & so on the 臭豆腐 really lives up to its name i could smell it before i see it! 粉圆加爱玉 was super yummy! some refreshing drink with loads of pearls mmm~ 再来一杯吧!
we witnessed a really hilarious scene (well, not exactly funny to those involved though) we were walking down a street lined with those mobile food stalls when suddenly, someone behind me said,"警察来了!" & a series of things happened - every stall switched off its lights, stopped all cooking, packed everything, & everyone was pushing their carts, escaping! it all happened in a few minutes, wow. they were really quick, able to disappear into nowhere! 一定有练过的! i juz found it so funny the crowded street that it once used to be, became dark & quiet 笑死我们啦。。
caught the last train back to our hotel! the taiwanese style is to keep to the RIGHT on escalators - different from the singaporean style & they were all so orderly watched channel V almost every night, heex. many entertainment shows + MVs! wootx. now i'm so familiar with 棒棒堂 (& abit more about 黑涩会美眉)! haha. it's so cute in taiwan, that they don't use 弟弟妹妹 for young boys & girls they call them - 底迪 & 美眉 instead wahaha. funny.
DAY 2:: 15 May 2007 (Tue) [weather:: cloudy] [location:: taipei/ hualien city]
we would be leaving taipei (so fast?!) for hualien today! don't worry, we will be back! haha. visited the hotel's 商务中心 at the first level it's somewhat like a lounge where there was free internet access + coffee! shiok.
we planned to take the 12.30pm train to hualien, but we missed it! it's ok, we took the next one, which came at 1.15pm we thought IT WAS OKAY to juz take the next one, but we were wrong, haha since we had no assigned seats on this next train we ended up changing seats again & AGAIN & AGAIN =.=" it was no easy task man to bring down our luggages & move to the next empty seats
the scenery the ride provided compensated for it though it was a coastal track so i had a good view of the sea, the sandy shores & the mountains! -mesmerized- (so i didn't sleep at all!)
arrived at hualien at 4pm & it started pouring really heavily we hailed a cab which brought us to our hotel - 蓝天丽池饭店 (azure hotel) i didn't realise their drivers were on the left-side till i wanted to take the seat beside the driver! (i went to the left front door & found the driver there, haha.) weird!
this time, we had a room for 4 so it was really comfortable, whew. no more smuggling-in & squeezing onto a bed for the time being the hotel provided excellent service too
we spent the night walking around the hualien city the vicinity around our hotel we bought several packets of mochi from their famous 曾记 store also had 一笼的小包子 at a very, very low price! my god. then we tried 鹅肉, which tasted like duck meat & the XL-sized 泡冰! too much for the 4 of us!
got back to the hotel & bought 署圈圈 (curly fries!) from the 24hr mac juz right in front of our hotel! cool. how i wish singapore's mac serves curly fries too!
DAY 3:: 16 May 2007 (Wed) [weather:: sunny] [location:: hualien - taroko national park]
excellent day! the sun was up & high & we started our day really early - 6am! -.-zZz had the buffet breakfast, which was quite yummy! heex.
today, we were going to see the world-class attraction - the taroko gorge! since it's located at a very ulu place we decided to follow a day-tour package the tour bus came to pick us up from our hotel at 8.15am (heex, many nice chinese songs played on the bus!) before going to other hotels to pick some others up & can you believe how small this world is? i saw Samantha (my ex-munchie colleague)!
at 9.30am, we arrived at the taroko national park we took the amazing central cross-island highway up the mountains (which starts at taichung & ends at taroko) the itineary is as follows:: 1. 太管处游客中心 (taroko tourists center) 2. 布洛湾台地 (buluowan trail) 3. 燕子口 (swallow grottoes) 4. 靳珩公园 (jinheng park) 5. 慈母桥 (the good mothers' bridge) 6. 缘水合流步道 at 11.30am, we stopped to have buffet lunch at a 5-star hotel - 天祥晶华 (grand formosa - taroko) what a buffet spread! we continued our tour after buying some souveniers 1. 九曲洞步道 (tunnel of nine turns - we took a 1.9km walk through it!) 2. 长春词 (eternal spring shrine) 3. 名产巡礼 (we were brought to a store that sold various kinds of stones) 4. 七星潭 (seven stars lake) the seven stars lake had a VERY beautiful beach!!! the water was clear blue! wow. but we saw many dead pufferfish on the shore =(
4.30pm, we were back at our hotel 6.30pm, we took a cab to a night market near 南滨公园 but it was so small! we completed the area in juz a few minutes' time we tried 甜不辣! 8pm, we walked into a nearby pub - allstar live house! (奥斯卡音乐复合餐厅) woohoo. it was still rather early for the 'live' band to start so we juz had corona & played some card games the 'live' band performance started at 10pm - with Evan (铭和) as the lead singer! they started off with stand by me & i thought it's gonna be an 'english songs' band but it turned out that they sang many NICE chinese pop songs - 专属天使, 非你莫属, 我会好好过, 你把我灌醉, one night in 北京 along with english songs like - better man, smooth & sex bomb wahaha. totally ENJOYED the night! =) we even took a picture with Evan, hoho (he's so tall!) & he asked us,"你们是花莲的学生吗?" ("are you students from hualien?") wahaha. & he was surprised that we were from singapore! this allstar 'LIVE' house has its own website - Allstar Live House & the boss had uploaded 2 photos of us on it! here's the link to the photos::
us with our corona! us with Evan!!
us with corona!
with evan! ( from left, Sharon, Yih Hong, my sister, Evan, me)
evan!
evan again!
DAY 4:: 17 May 2007 (Thu) [weather:: rainy/ cloudy] [location:: hualien/ taipei]
some change in plans decided not to stay for another day in hualien cos there was nothing much to see anyway so we cancelled our third night's stay at azure hotel & took a train to taipei in the morning (it was a comfortable ride this time)
1.30pm, we checked-in once again to deja vu hotel strolled around the nearby SOGO departmental store my sister & i then went taipei main station while Sharon & Yih Hong continued shopping there we visited new world shopping centre + many other malls we queued for the famous 甜甜圈专卖店 - mister donut! we had almost S$10-worth of doughnuts! wahaha. tasted really yummy! =) we continued walking around the streets & came to AT-国际发型 (attractive) hair salon since i had long wanted a haircut i went in & had a 1.5hr haircut haha. almost fell asleep when my hair was being washed & my head being massaged the service was so good! i had milk tea to drink & tv to watch! =) my hairdresser was a young lady, U-Li who was so friendly we chatted about the various places i should go in taipei & the goodies i should try, heex. she also recommended a hairstyle for me so i ended up having my hair 烫! how cool! this was my first time doing such a weird thing to my always-so-straight-&-flat hair! i kidda like it! heex. cos my head doesn't feel so heavy now, hoho. after that LONG haircut, my sister & i walked all the way down to zhong xiao fu xing station to meet up with Sharon & Yih Hong along the way, we met this taiwanese guy, who was selling a handphone pouch + keychain he was so chatty & we bought it from him to show support for his design on the pouch, hoho.
we went back to the hotel first before taking a cab at 11pm to a very famous club in taipei - LUXY we were entitled to 2 free drinks & it so happened that there was a dancing contest that night - merry monarc - girls gone wild girls freestyle dance battle contest! woohoo.
GIRLS GONE WILD!
the music was so-so & i STILL don't like the clubbing scene, yucks. preferred last night's pubbing experience! we left the club at 2.30am but we still didn't go back to the hotel yet! wahaha. we went up to the 14th level of the same building (as LUX) to play snooker! hoho. it's a 24hr snooker gaming centre, woohoo. had so much fun during that few rounds though i could hardly play a guy-in-charge came to us & said "我们的店请咖啡。" i didn't quite understand what he meant, so i asked, "啊?什么意思?" he replied, "咖啡。" & all of us juz burst out laughing, muahaha. i could understand what 'coffee' means, juz not quite sure what were they doing with the coffee 原来, they wanted to give us 4 cups of coffee, on the house haha. coffee at 3am?!?
when we approach the counter to pay for our games, the cashier was nodding off behind the counter! hahah. took quite a while for us to wake him up to collect our money damn funny!
4am, headed back to hotel for some rest!
DAY 5:: 18 May 2007 (Fri) [weather:: rainy] [location:: taipei - national palace museum, ximenting]
had the hotel's buffet breakfast with my sister the food was so cold! yikes.
when the rest had gotton up, we walked to 忠孝敦化 (zhong xiao dun hua), one station away had desserts at 糖朝 (tang chao), a chinese restaurant i had mango sago, so SUPER sweet. this restaurant was opened by 吴宗宪 (Jacky Wu) but he's no longer one of the shareholders "他已经退股很久了。" - according to one of the staff oops.
next, we took a train + a bus ride to 故宫 (national palace museum) near Shilin & we were lucky! today was the international museums day, so the entrance fee was waived! wahaha. =) but it was so crowded, with many students the museum exhibited several ornaments from the olden times very exquisite, but we could hardly appreciate their value =xX
at 4pm, we left the museum for 西门町 (ximenting)! hoho. shopping frenzy! even tried the FAMOUS-ka-siao 阿宗面线 (ah zong mee sua) it's juz S$2 for a small bowl! one interesting thing was - there were no tables in the store & people seldom take-away, everyone was juz standing outside the store, eating the mee! then they would put the bowls into a pail orderly cool.
when we returned to the hotel, we were so tired, but still didn't go to bed, hoho. watched a dvd - eternal summer (a R21 gay movie!) before sleeping at 2am!
DAY 6:: 19 May 2007 (Sat) [weather:: cool/ cloudy] [location:: taipei - taipei 101, raohe night market]
even though the buffet breakfast kidda sucks i still woke up early to have it with my sister (she seemed to enjoy it very much)
today we were going to visit the WORLD'S TALLEST BUILDING - taipei 101! wow wow wow. at 1pm, we took the WORLD'S FASTEST ELEVATOR up to the 89th observatory level there was a 电梯小姐 (a lady in the elevator being our guide) bringing us up it was rather cloudy, so everything looked so misty to us this experience reminded me of the tokyo tower where we were also viewing the city outside from somewhere-up-there i also paid NT$100 (~S$5) more to go up to the 91st level outdoor observatory goodness. it was so chilly out there, cos it was drizzling a little & the wind was strong once again, it was too cloudy! we stayed at the observatory for 1.5hr before going down to shop around the mall
my sister & i were planning to visit 阿里山 (alishan) tomorrow, so we did our registration with a tour group through a 7-11's fax machine (oh yeah, they do provide such service there!) we then spent the next half an hour searching for Sharon & Yih Hong in that BIG BIG mall 搞失踪啊! walked around new york new york & neo19 both rather similar shopping malls with nothing interesting took a shuttle bus back to taipei main station, freaking packed! the driver was so humourous! he was briefing us about alighting later, so he said, "待会儿下车的时候,会有一些要上车的人从后门挤上来。麻烦你们把他们挤回去。" (later when you alight, there will be people who will be boarding through the backdoor, kindly push them
back.) HAHAHA. everyone on the bus laughed! hoho.
took the train to houshanpi station where we had a quick & cheap dinner at 胡须张卤肉饭 then walked past 五分埔 (wufenpu) to get to 松山 railway
station (don't worry, we will be back to 五分埔!) but we still managed to grab some snacks while walking through it, hoho. my sister & i bought our train tickets to 嘉義 (chiayi) we had quite a few hours to spare before boarding the train, & so we went 绕河夜市 (raohe night market)! woohoo. it's a really good place for food + shopping! everything was so CHEAP! we spent every remaining cent we had there, then ended up drawing more NT$, oops. but there were juz too many things to buy!
at 11.15pm, my sister & i boarded the overnight train to 嘉義 (chiayi) intended to have a good night's rest on the train (my sister did) but i wasn't feeling at all comfortable sleeping on the train, so i hardly slept at all, throughout the long, dark journey yawnx.
DAY 7:: 20 May 2007 (Sun) [weather:: rainy - FREEZING!] [location:: chiayi - alishan]
4am, we arrived at 嘉義 (chiayi) station when the train stopped at that station, i looked out of the window, it was almost pitch dark from far i could see a sign saying 嘉義 but i still wasn't sure if this was the RIGHT station to alight cos, it juz didn't look like a proper platform to alight! so after much hesitation, we alighted, & phew, it was the correct station my goodness. & since we were really early, we waited at the station (my sister juz continued her sleep) till 8.30am, for someone to pick us up
at 9am, we took the forest railway train up 阿里山 (alishan) (there are only THREE such railways in the world!) it was a long 3.5hr ride & very bumpy! but it was a really beautiful journey, especially when we climbed higher & higher we climbed more than 2km above ground! we saw a huge stretch of 云海 (sea of clouds!) it felt like we were above lots of cotton candies! hoho. the train had to travel backwards quite a few times cos of some obstacles at the front i guess halfway through the ride, we also had 便当 from 奋起湖 (fenqihu) sent to us at lunchtime! not quite used to the taste, but it was alright!
1230pm, we arrived at 阿里山 (alishan) it was raining rather heavily & it was FREEZING!!! the temperature - 12 deg cel! goodness. BRR. it was due to the high altitude we were at + the icy wind + the rain cannot take it!!! *faintx* i was practically SHAKING what a waste, we were at this beautiful place, but we could only shop around the shops near the station many goodies to buy! even bought a sweater there cos i really couldn't survive in juz a polo tee the aunties there were asking me,"你这样穿不会冷吗?" of cos 会 la! =|
we were picked by a driver at around 3pm+ drove downhill to 奋起湖 (fenqihu) while driving downhill, the driver had to be so careful of falling rocks! due to the rain + wind scary. shopped at 奋起湖 & had 便当 for dinner there we then continued our journey down to 人间 arrived at 嘉義 (chiayi) station at 6pm+ & we bought the train tickets back to taipei! but there were no seats on the train! (since we chose to have the cheaper tickets, boohoo.) so we were standing at the area between 2 cabins initially, then after a few stations, my sister took an empty seat an elderly man was sitting beside her & HE GAVE HIS SEAT UP TO ME!!! so that my sister & i could sit together x_X!! i didn't want to take it but he insisted, & even stood together with me -..-" he said he was alighting at the next station (but hello, in taiwan, the next station could mean an hour later) i took the seat eventually -dopex- very nice of him though =)
11pm, we finally arrived at taipei! our familiar ground! got back to deja vu hotel & planned our activities for the next few days! heex.
DAY 8:: 21 May 2007 (Mon) [weather:: sunny!] [location:: danshui/ raohe night market]
got up rather early for the buffet breakfast & this time, Sharon joined us!
today was a sight-seeing day! very good weather for what we would be doing today, cheers! set off at 10.30am to visit 龙山寺 (longshan temple), a very famous temple in taiwan then we moved on to 台湾民主纪念馆 (C.K.S. memorial hall) there was some construction going on took a train + cab to 八大电视台 (GTV), the tv station that makes 娱乐百分百 (entertainment 100%)! but it was quite a wasted trip, cos we didn't see much! =/ had a quick lunch - 蚵仔面线 (oyster mee sua)!
next stop - 淡水 (danshui)! we walked through 淡水老街 there were so many things to buy + eat again! woohoo. even saw snoopyland there! ahhh~ took a bus to 渔人码头, what a pretty place! we had planned to watch the sunset there, & WE DID! heex. the weather was so good, the sun shining so brightly! =) we went up 情人桥 (lovers' bridge) hoho. the entire bridge was lined with couples! haha. the wind was SUPER strong on the bridge! felt like i was about to be blown away, seriously! *WHOOSH*
after viewing the beautiful sunset, we left for 五分埔 (wufenpu) - LOADS of clothes there but we hardly bought any, haha cos all were more or less the same pattern we then went to our favourite 绕河夜市 (raohe night market)! heex. bought a whole lot of stuff again we were so exhausted that we took a cab back to our hotel!
stayed up till 2am to view our crazy photos today! hohoho.
DAY 9:: 22 May 2007 (Tue) [weather:: sunny!] [location:: jiufen]
boohoo. leaving taiwan tomorrow! =( time flies, really!
got up early for the buffet breakfast, but i didn't have anything getting really sick of it! *puke* so i juz had a cup of hot coffee, to keep myself from freezing.
took a bus to 九份 (jiufen), a famous tourist attraction somewhere at taipei county there were lots of mountains there, & the road up to the town was so narrow, steep & dangerous! but the bus driver was so pro la we alighted at the terminal stop - 金瓜石 (jinguashi) & realised there was only scenery to see not the 九份 (jiufen) streets so we took some photos of the surroundings then took a bus downhill to 九份老街 shopped around that area - many exquisite stuff!
went back to the hotel in the afternoon then went for our gala dinner (gonna be our last dinner in taiwan!) at 飞天麻辣 (fei tian ma la)! from the name, you could have guessed - yesh - we had ma la steamboat dinner! & mind you, the stuff there was so FRESH! especially the salmon fish head, omg. YUMMY!!! i had kilos of 金针菇 again & there were various flavours of ice-cream to choose from too! (luckily we still had 'space' for that after the steamboat, heex.)
did some last minute shopping at 西门町 (ximenting) (yeah, we're back again!) lalala! =)
we spent our final night in taiwan at taipei's NEWEST KTV BRANCH - 钱柜 partyworld (cashbox partyworld)!!! =D wahaha. it's located at 西门町 (ximenting) heex. the check-in counter was at a lobby, which looked like one of a high-class hotel! wootx. damn classy! had so fun in the ktv, wahaha. we sang sang sang till 3am!!! HIGH KA! then took a cab back to the hotel
but we didn't sleep at all! we displayed everything we've bought (since day 1!!!) on the bed & took photos of them! incredible. then painfully packed (read:: SQUEEZED) them back into our limited luggages OMG.
DAY 10:: 23 May 2007 (Wed) [weather:: cloudy/ rainy] [location:: yangmingshan/ shilin/ taoyuan airport/ singapore]
BOOHOO. it's our final day in taiwan =(
i skipped the er xin buffet breakfast again while the rest went to "enjoy" it eeks.
9am, we checked out of deja vu hotel we deposited our luggages with them as we still had some places to visit! heex.
went to 杨明山 (yangmingshan) & we took a tour bus around the area but i was sleeping throughout, oops. too tired le! can't help it.
also made a last visit to 士林 (shilin), ate what we craved before leaving this place! i had 虾仁煎, which tasted good! =P~
went back to the hotel to collect our luggages & boarded the coach to taoyuan international airport
took the jetstar flight back to singapore at 6.25pm & arrived at around 11pm Fabian came! =) his dad (who's a cab driver) gave us a meter-off ride home! so nice of him! =)
HOME! (still gotta get up in a few hours' time for WORK! oh god.)
(MANY, MANY photos will be up soon! stay tuned.)
