was at green brew the whole day
tryin' to help a P4 boy with his crossword puzzle

Wei Wei, Vivian & i went spageddies to meet Seok Chuan for supper
we went the coffee connoisseur for drinks, starter + desserts
until my sleep research is over
then i'll take coffee
sobx!
but we reached home so late
i didn't get to sleep before 1am

got up early in the mornin'
& went for my sleep research session 2
was very early
since i chose to take the train instead
(traffic jam expected for bus190 in the mornin')
was brought to the control station outside the scannin' room
did some practice on the cognitive task that i did the other time
(gettin' easier, heex)
removed all metallic objects + shoes
couldn't wear my specs too
so was given a plastic frame with the correct lenses
which was so loose
anyway
i then entered the scannin' room
for the functional magnetic resonance imagin' scan
(in short, fMRI scan)
they even asked which radio station do i prefer
so they'll play it when gettin' ready for the scan
haha
then the preparations for the scan::
- earplugs
(they said there'll be LOUD bangin' noises durin' the scan, hmmx)
- hair-net - to protect my hair
- headphones - so the lady observin' my scan can communicate with me
- emergency bell - in case, for any reason, i wanna terminate the experiment
- response box (remote control) - to perform the cognitive task inside the scanner
[i then laid on the scanner bed..]
- bite onto a mould - a bite-bar
[by this time my head couldn't move at all, the scanner coil + the bite-bar prevented any movement of the head]
when all were ready
i was bein' placed into the scanner
woo
all i could see was a black screen
& had to perform ROUNDS & ROUNDS of the task
-.-zZz
but between each round
the lady would ask how was i feelin'
& there was a ratin' list on the screen
so i had to tell her from '1' to '9'
which condition best fitted
all along i was tellin' her '1' = 'extremely alert'
haha
'9' was somethin' like - 'very sleepy, makin' lots of effort in stayin' awake'
i think i scored almost full marks for the tasks
hoho
after completin' the rounds
i still had to stay inside the scanner for another 20mins
(took almost 1.5hr for the entire scan to be done)
so i juz listened to yes933
but alot of disruptions from the noises of the scan
some buzzin', whirrin' sound
it wasn't bad at all
except for the discomfort from the bite-bar
(it's makin' it hard to swallow my saliva)
& my butt was achin'
(for lyin' FLAT for so long)
haha
quite interestin'
anyway was paid $30 after fillin' up some post-scan questionnaire

i still have my actiwatch on me!!!

there was also a group of guys
(non-singtel staff) who came to DRINK
they really drank ALOT
they ordered a total of 16 jugs of beer from us!!!
ah well, maybe cos there were about 10 of them
when one of them placed an order with me, he said
"can we have 2 jugs of beer, 2 mugs & your name please?"

they ordered their last 2 jugs at 10pm
& we had a hard time gettin' them to leave

a friend of mine, Jingwei passed away on 9 apr'05, 2.40pm
he was in my orientation group durin' the first 3 months in njc
still remembered our orientation groupmates always commented that he looked like a chiobu
cos his fringe was really long then
we were not really close
but still, sometimes we met each other on the bus
(he stayed near me)
& chatted throughout the journey home
he died in a bike accident
read that he was tryin' to overtake a car
swerved too hard
& flew off his bike
the wheels of a bus ran over his head
durin' his funeral, his coffin was closed
muz be really tragic, haix
i think i know which road
keep seein' the large, blue fatal accident sign beside that road
callin' for witnesses
it's the traffic junction from teck whye to bt panjang
near phoenix LRT station
BIKES..haix
he's only 21
a very cute lookin' guy, friendly, fantastic smile
the last time i saw him was on 4 feb'2003
he told me he had already gone to register for his drivin' license on the day he turned 18
& he was already takin' his last few lessons
he was really enthusiastic about drivin'

sometimes i wish i'd get an internship
& QUIT both jobs
at least there's a reason to quit
for now, i don't see why i should quit

was woken up by the irritatin' drillin' noise

it's the readin' week!!
no more lectures + tutorials
no more projects too
only revision + more revision

took a super long bus journey to SGH
went for the first session of the sleep research
the cognitive neuroscience laboratory is at such an ulu place!!
somewhere near SGH blk4
among the old buildings
goodness
i first read thru' the guidelines of the whole research study
(freakin' long)
then proceeded to do some simple cognitive tasks
first task:: i was presented with a black computer screen
there were alphabets appearin'
then there were rules to whether i should press '1' or '2'
anyway after some practice
i could do it fairly well
but was tirin'
to stare at it for a long time
next task:: had to do 36 questions on pattern-recognition problems in 40mins
oh man, hated that
upon completion, i was given an actiwatch to wear
i have to wear it at all times, except bathin' & swimmin'
it will keep track of my sleepin' patterns i guess
boohoo
gotta sleep before 1am every night
& get up before 9am
(at least 7hrs of sleep)
it's gonna be challengin'

here's the details::
1) Briefing, Practice and Collection of actiwatches (April 18, Monday)
a.. 2 hours long
b.. Briefing on the study
c.. 15 minutes practice on simple cognitive task
d.. 40 minutes of logic test
e.. Collection of actiwatches to be worn at all times for a week prior to
the scanning session
2) Scanning Session (April 25, Monday)
a.. 2 hours long
b.. You will be scanned while performing a cognitive task
c.. You will be reimbursed S$30 upon completion of this session
3) Sleep Deprivation Session (May 3, Tuesday)
a.. 25 hours long
b.. You will have to stay awake at all times throughout the session
c.. You are allowed to bring in work to do, books to read and laptop to
use
d.. You will be asked to fill in a set of questionnaires and perform a 10
minute long PVT task once every hour
e.. You will be scanned twice while performing a cognitive task
