we were slammed so badly over this long weekend

$10 TIPS!

but i had no choice but to pay some attention to this
(& every mornin' there'll be party members goin' round the estate
tryin' to psycho us to vote for them through their loudspeakers.

munchie monkey was slammed by exam-finishers as usual
(that sudden MAD one hour after papers ended)
otherwise, it was all quiet & peaceful
& oh, how could i forget - BORIN'.
i actually had to take a cab AGAIN
damn pissed with myself
i ended work at 430pm at munchie monkey
of cos i wasn't let off on time lo
(it was still quite busy, so i didn't want to keep pesterin' them to let me go off earlier)
but sighx.
i gotta reach spageddies @ paragon by 530pm
bloody hell.
& when i RAN to the bus-stop, bus95 JUZ LEFT
no way was i goin' to wait like an idiot for the next one
i was definitely goin' to be late if i didn't get a cab
& I DON'T LIKE BEIN' LATE FOR WORK!
the anxiety sucks.
to give myself peace of mind, i hopped onto a cab
(i almost thought i heard my wallet screamin' in protest)

HELL-OF-A-BLOODY-FREAKIN'-OHMYGOD-DAMN BUSY!!!
the queue was always there
hundreds of people wantin' to dine here
every table was turned over & over again
i had kidda expected this crowd
cos many have juz received their end-of-month pay
& of cos - the progress package
(ah yes, i'm 800 bucks richer suddenly)
encountered a table of nasty customers
(i was told they are regulars, idiots.)
now, i really detest people STARIN' at my nametag
i mean, if you are smilin' & lookin' at my nametag, i'm fine with it of cos
but if you're doubtin' what i say
so you frown & stare at my nametag
i'm a server, not YOUR SERVANT, please do show some respect too
it doesn't mean you pay that few dollars of service charge
i muz pluck the stars for you if you want them
or magically produce teaspoons when stirrers can do the job juz fine
i didn't let them spoil my entire shift of cos
don't be mistaken that i'm anti-service
i enjoy this service line a whole lot!
99% of the time, i meet really nice people
only 1% of the time, i meet unreasonable people
it's really my pleasure to serve nice & appreciative customers
(my definition of 'nice & appreciative' doesn't mean you have to tip; juz a simple smile or nod is all i ask for! acknowledge, the least you could do.)
i remembered quite a few times,
when i was askin' the guest to sign on the receipts,
he took the bill holder from me (without lookin' at me, cos he was chattin' with his friends)
while checkin' & signin', he was STILL talkin'
& he juz passed the bill holder back to me (without lookin' at me again)
& continued his conversation with his friends
then i took the copies that were for him, together with his card, & returned politely to him, sayin' thank you, see you again! at the same time
but all he did was stretchin' his hand out to take it
all the while, talkin'
i felt like an idiot standin' there
as though i was INVISIBLE.
but i would juz shrug it off (at least i've done my part)
& continue to serve other guests
hopin' to meet nicer people
=)

a guest gave me $10 tips today!!!

but technically, i didn't get it, boo.
i shall elaborate
it was table 11, a foreign couple
i wasn't the one who took their order, i forgot if i was the one who served them drinks, but i also wasn't the one who served them their food
all i remembered doin' for them was - CLEARIN' THEIR PLATES!
i remembered cos the man was really nice, smilin' appreciatively
then when they were about to stand up & leave their table
(i was at some other table)
the man beckoned me over to their table
so i attended to him promptly, wantin' to find out how i could help him
he then pressed hard on the bill holder which was on the table
& pointed repeatedly at it, sayin',
"this is for you. keep it. well done, you've done a good job."
he then left.
wow.
but i had other more important things to attend to
than to see how much was inside that bill holder
i saw Sebas take the bill holder a while later
so i asked him how much was inside
he then opened up & we saw a 10-dollar note!
heex.
he was like,"wah, how do you know there's money inside? you saw him puttin' it in ah?"
hoho, of cos i know
=P
but since technically the money was inside the bill holder, left on the table
i didn't take it as personal tips
(only those shoved into my hand or pockets, then ya, i will keep!)
that $10 could have covered my cab fare in the afternoon, haha
but anyway, it's his words of appreciation that matter!
& it certainly does feel like i have that $10 as personal tips
so i shall add it to my collection!
$5 + $5 + $5 + $10 = $25 so far at spageddies!!!

WIN BY A MILE
(RECRUIT, THE STRAITS TIMES, 29 APRIL 2006)
Are you prepared to go the extra mile for your customers? Here are some tips on what it takes and how you can train them up.
Imagine that you have interacted with a service provider, and this person did something really special for you. What is the likelihood that you will remember him?
Most likely high. In fact, some of you will patronise this organisation only if that particular person is around to serve you - simply because you want the same level of service you previously enjoyed.
Have you ever wondered why this happens? The answer lies in something called "going the extra mile".
"Going the extra mile" means doing something special that the customer deems important and refreshing. It shows that you have truly understood the customer's needs and expectations. It sounds easy enough, so why then is everyone not going the extra mile for his customers?
Let us first understand what going the extra mile is about:
It requires you to challenge the status-quo
Going the extra mile requires a fundamental re-think of what you have been doing for many years and have unknowingly internalised such behaviour to become habits. It requires you to challenge your current ways of interacting with customers and, in the process, explore new ways of delighting them.
- Service action point: List all possible situations that result in a negative response to a customer, then explore all the possible ways of finding a positive response to these situations.
It requires effort
Going the extra mile does not guarantee that you will be recognised for your effort. In fact, more often than not, most positive service encounters go unnoticed by customers, and the only "recognition" comes in the way of self-satisfaction.
- Service action point: Reflect on the most recent compliment you have received from a customer. Recall how satisfied you were at the end of that service encounter.
The next time you serve a customer, let "self-satisfaction" be the driving force for providing excellent service, and be amazed at how this changes the way you view your contribution to the organisation.
It needs a customer-first mindset
Ask anyone in your organisation what his role in the organisation is. You will probably receive a response relating to his job task - for example, "I process applications", "I repair equipment" or "I am a supervisor of a warehouse".
What these individuals fail to realise is the connection between their work and how it contributes towards the customer satisfaction and delight.
Failure to "see the bigger picture" results in a very narrow definition of one's role, and this in turn, directly or indirectly, affects the quality of work that is done.
- Service action point: The next time you answer a phone call, prepare a document, transport a box in a warehouse from one location to another or carry out any task in an organisation, "link" the work that you do with how it will impact the customer.
In other words, maintain a customer focus. You will realise how your thoughts shape your actions, your role in the entire service delivery chain and, ultimately, the part that you play in delighting customers.
It requires support from others
"No time", "no resources" and "no budget" are three of the common reasons for not providing excellent service. Unfortunately, living with constraints is the reality of the world that you live in today - but you can still go the extra mile.
The key is to be able to synergise with others, leverage on their strengths and solicit their support. You will find that there are people who will be forthcoming to help you, and avail their time and resources if they know you are trying to delight your customers by going the extra mile.
- Service action point: The next time an opportunity arises to go the extra mile for a customer, and you do not have the necessary resources, go up to someone who does and say, "I would like to go the extra mile for my customer, would you be able to help?" Get ready to hear a "yes".
It starts with the word "going"
The idea of going the extra mile for customers is nothing new. The question is not about your familiarity with this idea. It is about being able to translate this thought into action, and about execution. What differentiates exceptional service providers from mediocre ones is the ability to take action. Stop pondering, reflecting and saying, "I am thinking of..." Put your thoughts into action and move from "deciding" to "decided" to go the extra mile.
- Service action point: Think of one thing that you can do for your customer immediately and carry it out.
It requires an understanding of what is considered an "extra mile"
What one customer perceives as "extra", another may consider as "basic". Hence, it is imperative to first understand your customer's key expectations - what he considers basic and extra.
Once you have fully understood his expectations, craft a strategy aimed at consistently delighting him by going the extra mile.
- Service action point: Review recent letters of compliment from customers, and identify what triggered them. Surely, the compliments stemmed from someone actually having gone the extra mile. The next time you interact with your customer, demonstrate such behaviour.
In short, going the extra mile requires effort. However, the satisfied look on your customer's faces, the repeatt business and a sense of self-satisfaction will make it all worth it.

MY FIRST PROFESSIONAL INTERVIEW
it certainly doesn't feel like my first paper is tomorrow
when i'm doin' all the irrelevant things these days
today? preparin' & goin' for my first PROFESSIONAL interview

the day started with a jog
then a shower
THEN!
applied some make-up myself

my eye-shadow was almost invisible i guess
& i wondered if i overdid my blush

(not exactly new, cos i bought it before chinese new year, but didn't get to wear it!)

i was darn early

 ..waitin' for time to pass

went up to the 20th storey
the entrance to the office of J.D. Power
inside was a standard office
those you see on tv
cubicles of tables
i was brought to a desk with a computer
& had to do a half hour test on SPSS & excel
realised i don't know a lot of stuff!
then was a 1.5hr interview!!
so freakin' long
2 ladies interviewed me, one of them was a japanese!
the view outside the meetin' room
both asked if i would be able to adapt to this workin' environment
as they realised i've always been workin' in the food service line
& this job would be rather routine & requires a lot of time in front of the computer
the jobscope
well, it DOES look like a really routined job
is this what i really wanna do in life?
i find joy & satisfaction in the food service line
is there where i belong?
but i like workin' on computers & with numbers too
give it a try?
anyway the offer is still not confirmed though
i'll still have another round of interview with the directors
woah..
i'm not a christian
but this makes a lot of sense
if God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE?
what a healthy lifestyle i had
from last night
1) went for a jog late last evenin'
2) had an apple!
3) i went to bed at 11pm (WOAH! although i was tired from the past few days' rushin' of projects & assignments, i still had problems fallin' asleep initially, too early la)
4) woke up at 8am this mornin' (opened my eyes once my alarm clock went off. didn't laze in bed at all!)
5) went for a jog again (i love to jog when exams are drawin' near, ever since JC. don't know why)
6) drank a litre of water when only half the day had passed (i usually forget to drink)
7) took a shower in the early afternoon (i've always been bathin' after midnight, which is no good!)
but all came to end
when i had curry chicken + fried pork + a fried chicken wing for dinner
muahaha.
so much for a "healthy lifestyle"

CHILLED.
was supposed to work the whole day at spageddies today
but i swapped my shift with Kai Feng's 1130am-6pm!
woohoo
i prefer this shift actually
don't have to waste my time rottin' 2.5hrs away
& can reach home so much earlier
& this shift is only 1hr lesser than split-shifts!
doesn't it make more sense to work 1130am-6pm?
but time really crawled between 4pm-6pm

will be cuttin' down on work from next week
in view of the approachin' exams!
so my schedule for next week is juz::
tue dinner:: munchie monkey
wed lunch:: munchie monkey
sat lunch + dinner:: spags
sun lunch + dinner:: spags
so much lesser right?
hopefully i'll use my free time to MUG la!

BAND CONCERT!
today was the first time
that i was not workin' the saturday dinner shift
only worked till 6pm!
had promised Zoey long ago that i would be goin' to watch her band concert - unity secondary's resonance I!
(wow, first concert!)
Snoopie, Andrew, Kai Feng & i went together
it was held at UCC @ NUS
bein' a graduatin' student of NUS
it's strange that this was my first time goin' into UCC
haha
it wasn't a very big auditorium
i've been to bigger concert halls!
there was a choir performance before the actual band performance
they played familiar pieces such as oregon, the phantom of the opera, one moment in time & abba gold!
quite enjoyable
as there was even drama involved
sighx, made me miss bein' in a band quite a bit
especially the tough marchin' & whackin' of snare drums durin' my military band days
but i do miss the symphonic band days durin' jc too
i guess i miss the music we played
really good music!

F***ED-UP.
i'm soOoOoOoOoOo fed-up with what happened today
that i think i can ramble on forever
i don't understand what's the fuss!!!
or maybe i do, but i don't see it as bein' valid!

(sorry to those who have no idea of what i'm about to say..)
the situation is like this::
NUS students are havin' exams very soon -> munchie monkey staff can't work as much + we want time to study also -> may not have enough staff to work durin' the exams period since the cafe still has to run its operations as per normal -> source for external HELP! -> we can't get outside people to work (even for that COUPLE OF WEEKS) cos of some STUPID rule NUSSU has, sayin' that only NUS students are allowed to work here -> source for help within the SAME company: itafest! -> since i have friends at spageddies @ paragon, i juz casually asked if they could help out durin' these 2 to 3 weeks. NO ONE IS FORCIN' ANYONE TO HELP. those who have agreed to help did it on THEIR OWN ACCORD. if you can help, then THANK YOU SO MUCH, but if you can't, it's really ok!

why not give those who are so free, like those on holidays, the chance to work instead?

spageddies' management knew about it
things got SOOOOOOOOO complicated
i don't understand why.
the situation is so straight-forward
they have to complicate things to the extent that Steven, Sebas, Remy, Ivan, Henry gotta exchange unpleasant calls
of cos, i had to call Steven
to find out first-hand on what was happenin' & what's all this fuss about
well, to them, we are "snatching" their staff
(note:: we DIDN'T snatch, we ASKED, they AGREED. all these were two-way!)
i seriously don't understand
i've asked Seeto & Casie
(two of those who wanted to help out)
they wanted to help cos they were not workin' at spageddies ANYWAY!
so why not?
& what's more, munchie monkey & spageddies are under the SAME company
what's wrong with helpin' each other?
people from spageddies @ paragon can go over to spageddies @ marina square to work
without gettin' F***ED
yet they are under DIFFERENT companies!
HOW UNFAIR.
well, i was told we CAN get help from them
through Henry!
why go the long way?
& anyway, part-timers are called PART-TIMERS cos they have NO obligation to work only at this single place!
they can CHOOSE to work anywhere, anytime they like!
i may be quite silly
to set this rule for myself that: as long as i have nothin' on on saturday night, I MUZ WORK THE DINNER SHIFT
cos i know, they never have enough people for this slammin' shift
no one says i MUZ do that!
then why do i feel bad when i don't work on saturday night?
COS I'M STUPID.
i don't want to be as SELFISH as them
help when i can, why not?

& i happened to work only the lunch shift!
