2008 FLASHBACKS..

it's the end of 2008!
2008 has been a generally smooth-sailing year with many memorable moments
i haven't done much though
except EAT, EAT and EAT!
haha, i've had an uncountable number of steamboats, buffets, feasts! oops.
besides eating, there were also..

THE YEAR 2008

COMPANY HAPPENINGS! - we had a company team-building event at sentosa at the beginning of the year, to remind us the importance of teamwork! it was one great event as i totally enjoyed it! then there was the annual dinner-&-dance - viva las vegas, haha, yes it's casino themed! the host was hilarious and he made the dinner wonderful. on 15 apr, i broke my record of working overtime - i worked till 0145h (which is close to 16hrs of work!), madness. i pray this won't happen in 2009! the annual fire drill is also worth mentioning, haha. climbing down 44 flights of stairs ain't an easy feat! and after more than 2 years of sitting near my boss and Wei Leng, i had a change of seat! getting rather used to it now. my buddy, Yongmin, has also left the company on 15 Dec. he's now not only my ex-classmate, but also my ex-colleague! all the best to his new career! the last event my company organised was a visit to the night safari! it was some sort of an amazing race, which we had to look for answers along the way.

HAPPY MOMENTS! - attended 2 church weddings and 2 baby showers this year! the 2 weddings - Amy & Darren, Guang Han & Melissa! the 2 baby showers - Wei Leng's baby boy (Benjamin) and Yvonne's baby girl (Shan Ci)! bless them all~

GADGETS-RELATED! - my office's computer upgraded to one which is much faster and has a flat-screen LCD screen, hoho! i'd also spent quite abit on gadgets this year. i bought a 8 megapixel panasonic lumix digital camera for $499 and also a new hp-compaq presario laptop for $1,699. the new laptop is to replace my 5-year-old laptop which died on me towards the end of the year, boohoo!

ALMOST-DRUNK! - there were 2 occasions where i was almost-drunk (almost only, NOT drunk yet). first was after my company's dinner-&-dance, where i had some drinks with friends at cafe iguana @ clarke quay. then the next was a chill-out session at paulaner @ millenia walk. wahaha.

TRIPS! - didn't go overseas much this year, only went for a week-long's trip to taiwan and hong kong! i still enjoy taiwan LOADS! miss that place so much, hope to go again soon!

DRAMAS! - i watched 2 taiwanese dramas this year & i enjoyed both! the first was 篮球火 (Hot Shot), followed by 不良笑花 (Miss No Good). love both their soundtracks too!

OTHER EVENTS! - was the proctor for the CFA exams at expo for the first time! really liked this GOOD $$$ lobang! heex. there was also a chalet in july for a bunch of colleagues. then i also visited the sanrio-themed lanterns display at the chinese garden during the lantern festival, hoho. on 20 oct, i had my first bowling experience! woohoo. then as usual, i participated in standard chartered's 10km run! heex. will do so again in 2009!

had a hard time choosing the top 10 favourite songs for 2008, but finally, this is the list!

except the 2008 Singapore Standard Chartered 10km run i did on 7 Dec
together with Wei Leng
we completed in 1hr 50mins (OMG. that's 20mins slower than 2007!)
it's oki, we'll be better in 2009! heex.

my 5 year old laptop crashed on 13 Dec, BIG SIGHX.
its LCD screen no longer has light,
so even though everything was working fine,
i could hardly see a thing on the screen
so i went to get a new laptop - HP-Compaq Presario CQ45-120TX at harvey norman
it cost me $1,699! but of cos i'll be paying via instalments

AFTER SO LONG...

i really should blog a little?
ever since there's facebook,
i've become lazier here...... oops.

some quick updates!

Company matters...

1. Andrew's farewell
Andrew (my department manager) had left the company in september
we had a farewell lunch for him at Hans

2. change of seats
only last friday,
there were some changes to the seating of my department
after sitting beside Wei Leng for 2.5 years,
i had to switch places with Ralph,
& wouldn't be able to see my old neighbour anymore! =((
sad case.

3. fire drill
also on last friday,
our office building, 8 shenton way, had a fire drill session
we spent around 10+ minutes making our way down from the 44th level
44 FLIGHTS OF STAIRS!!!
*faintx.
my legs were super wobbly after the drill
& this weekend was tough - like an old ah ma lo
=xX

Birthdays...

1. Chuan Hui's birthday
had a feast at pizza hut to celebrate Chuan Hui's birthday!

2. Yih Hong's birthday surprise
gave Yih Hong a surprise that he wouldn't forget!
wahaha.
it was quite an impromptu surprise
last year, there was a struggling bee in his house that covered us
& the surprise was successful
this year, there was no bee, but we still surprised him all the same
imagine opening your bedroom door & seeing a group of friends standing outside with a cake (at midnight)?
hoho. =P

Fun fun fun...
1. mid-autumn festival
this year was a little special!
went chinese garden with Qiuyi to view the sanrio-themed lantern displays
very colourful, very pretty!

2. sentosa!!!
had a great time at sentosa on 5 oct with Qiuyi, Cecilia, Min Min!
it started out bad - with all the RAIN!
luckily the weather turned out fine, in fact, very FINE! haha.
our initial tanning spot was bad, cos of some nuisance people
we then moved to a better spot
& started playing beach volleyball!
we also borrowed a frisbee & threw it around, haha.
there were some guys joining us for both games
all in all, it was GREAT FUN!
we showered, then had a quick dinner at sakae sushi
& caught the songs of the sea performance,
a rather short & simple musical
last stop was new zealand natural! YUMX.

EAT CHEESE FOR A MORE LEVEL HEAD?

would like to share with you,
an article from the electric new paper on 11 june::

Research has shown that high levels of the brain chemical serotonin may be good for your career.

The Indepedent reported that psychologists at the University of Cambridge manipulated the diets of volunteers to alter their serotonin levels and found that when the levels of the brain chemical were low, the volunteers were more likely to allow emotion to rule their heads and make decisions that harmed their long-term interests.

But when the levels of serotonin were high they behaved in a more rational, level-headed fashion, putting their own material advancement ahead of the short-term satisfaction of telling their boss exactly what they thought of them.

The findings help explain why some people tend to overreact to a perceived unfairness, becoming angry and combative when they haven't eaten.

NATURE'S TRANQUILLISER

People with short fuses have traditionally blamed a shortage of calories - 'low blood sugar' - for their bad temper.

But the Cambridge psychologists say fluctuations in serotonin levels have more subtle effects.

Ms Molly Crockett of the Behavioural and Clinical Neuroscience Institute said: 'Our results suggest serotonin plays a critical role in social decision making by keeping aggressive social responses in check.'

To increase your serotonin levels, you need to eat food with high levels of tryptophan such as cheese, meat, soya beans, sesame seeds, chocolate, oats, bananas, milk and salmon. (i love cheese, meat, soyabean milk, chocolates, salmon!!! wootx.)

Tryptophan is also sold in healthfood stores as a dietary supplement that is claimed to act as 'nature's tranquilliser', boosting serotonin levels and making us happier, calmer and less stressed.

2008 TAIWAN + HONG KONG TRIP

the day started REALLY early - 4am!!!
we've been counting down to this day since 100 over days ago =))

stayed over at Qiuyi's house the night before
we were so excited that it was so damn hard to fall asleep!
(or was it cos we seldom sleep so early?)
we were really efficient in washing-up & dragging our luggages all the way to the mrt station

5.39am - we boarded the FIRST train! =)
another 2 of our travelmates - Rebecca & her mum were in the train as well
cost-saving tip:: take the train to the airport! =P

6.30am - arrived at changi airport!
we then checked-in our luggages, & very soon after,
we boarded our cathay pacific plane

8.05am - took off! BYE BYE, SINGAPORE!

9.30am - breakfast on plane was served! omelette! but it wasn't exactly very nice........oops.

11.55am - arrived at HK airport! juz for transit~

1.10pm - took off in the next flight towards our destination, taiwan!

3.00pm - arrived at taipei taoyuan airport! WELCOME TO TAIWAN once again! heex. =))
there was a coach waiting to pick us up to our hotel

4.30pm - long ride to our hotel. arrived at 长虹酒店 (rainbow hotel) finally! yippee! the location is DAMN good - right smack in the middle of 西门町(xi men ting - the shopping paradise!)

it's a nice, cosy room with the essential facilities
good enough for 4 nights' stay!

we spent the evening shopping around 西门町 (xi men ting),
then took a train to 士林夜市 (shih lin night market),
then back to 西门町 (xi men ting) again! lalala~
shopped & ate our night away..........
the 贡丸汤 (meatballs soup) is excellent there! TRY IT! =P~

we tried rainbow hotel's breakfast buffet
(it's provided, BUT..)
TOTALLY CANNOT MAKE IT AH!
gave up eating breakfast there, oops.

Qiuyi & i then went for some HOT SPRINGS session! woohoo.
i didn't get to try it during my last trip,
so this time round, i had to! =))

we took a shuttle bus from 新北投 (xin bei tou) station
to 春天酒店 (spring city resort) - a classy-looking hotel!

they are kidda famous for their hot springs, so here we are!
on the shuttle bus, when we about to reach the hotel,
we could see BIG signs saying "春天到了！" LOL!

we chose the outdoor hot springs & paid NT$800 (~ S$36.80) each
a robe, slippers, towel were provided along with a basket

after changing, we then plunged into our first hot spring - sleeping bath! hoho.
the waters were all around 38 ~ 40 deg cel, OUCH!
some of the springs were COLD water though
there are 9 outdoor pools to choose from,
& each has its own benefits
i especially liked one which has strong falling water which will hit my back & kidda massage it
shiok~
the hot weather had made the hot springs especially boiling as well?
gosh.

after the hot springs experience,
we went taipei main station to shop around
i thought there were quite many shopping places there,
but it seemed rather boring! zZz.
we tried the 饺子 and 锅贴 from 八方云集
& they were really GOOD! yumx.

we spent the evening shopping around 五分铺 (wu fen pu)
then took a cab down to 饶河夜市 (raohe night market)
we bought quite many things in these 2 places! woohoo. =))
the cab uncle even thought we were taiwanese who stayed overseas for a long time,
cos we spoke english so well! hahaha.
taiwanese!!! =P

we had 鲁肉饭 (lu rou fan) for dinner!
i was there was last year as well - 胡须张鲁肉饭 (hu xu zhang lu rou fan), the one near 五分铺 (wu fen pu)
hoho.

no more breakfast buffet for us! haha.
we could do without it anytime =xX

took a train + shuttle bus to taipei 101!
arrived at around lunchtime, so it's lunch first, at taipei 101's foodcourt!

this was the beehoon set i ordered - so many items! wow.

we spent some time "shopping" around taipei 101 mall
designer big brands like - COACH, LV, Dior, FENDI, PRADA, ... were ALL there!
didn't manage to buy anything of cos =P

sight-seeing time!
went up to the 89th level observatory
all so familiar; still remembered last year's experience!
lots of pictures taken UP there:

after the trip to the world's tallest building,
we headed to 永康街 (yong kang street)
where we heard there were many good food!
we had the MANGO SNOW ICE from the famous ice monster (great!)
& also had 小笼包 (xiao long bao) & 烧卖 (siew mai)
it was drizzling a little
took a cab back to 西门町 (xi men ting),
again the cab fare was so CHEAP! =P
we really could take cab more often! haha.

shopped around till 11pm,
then returned to hotel for a shower!
then we caught a MIDNIGHT MOVIE! wahaha.
get smart!

it got a little too boring towards the end,
& so i fell alseep! oops.
too tired!

it's our last day at taiwan (so fast?!?)
took a train + shuttle bus to 美丽华百乐园 (miramar entertainment park)!
there was so much to shop around the mall,
especially the 诚品书局 (eslite bookstore)!
hoho.

took the miramar's ferris wheel as well

as usual, we took a cab back to 西门町 (xi men ting)!
did our very last shopping in this area,
then had dinner at the cute 蛋蛋屋 (dan dan wu)
the food was not bad!

after the shops were closed,
we went back to our hotel & displayed all the stuff we'd bought!
these were Qiuyi & my collection over the past 4 days! WOOHOO.

off to hong kong tomorrow! =D

8.45am - boarded the coach to taipei taoyuan airport, had a good sleep on it!

12.30pm - took off on cathay pacific flight CX421
(lunch was 鲁肉饭 (lu rou fan) & it tasted really good!)

2.00pm - arrived at hong kong international airport! yahoo~
we spent quite a while waiting for other tourists to arrive, so that we can proceed to the coach to our hotel

3.45pm - boarded the coach to our pretty hotel, dorsett olympic hotel @ mongkok

it's really a very nice, cosy hotel,
juz a little inaccessible

we spent the evening walking around mongkok!

hong kong shopping streets are quite different from taiwan's
we could bargain for all we like in hong kong,

rise & shine!
we're into day 6 of our trip~ lalala.
& today was the 2nd day in hong kong!

a fantastic breakfast we had at 金华餐厅 (jin hua can ting)!

WAH.

after breakfast,
we took the train to 中环 (central)
walked.. walked.. walked..

reached the peak tram!

we took the tram up to the peak!
where the madame tussauds wax museum is!

we took LOADS of wacky photos with those wax figures!
muahaha. (SO FUN!!!)

came out of the wax museum into the open space!
it was rather misty & cooling!

we love this mirror-pillar, wahaha.
(you should know why)

walked around sogo @ 尖沙咀 (tsim sha tsui)
as we bought quite a few boxes of 老婆饼 (lao po bing),
we decided to return to the hotel first!
it poured so heavily on our way back! -.-zZz

we came out shopping again!
the same areas in mongkok!
it's our last night! boohoo.

dinner at 大家食 (da jia shi)::

the SUPER-NICE fried rice!

this pork cutlet was good too! yumx.

this bowl of noodles was totally UN-touched - we didn't like it!

after walking for a while,
Qiuyi suddenly sat down at a street stall
& ordered a bowl of wanton mee to eat! hahaha.
she had it the last time she came, & it was yummy! =P

it was a darn stormy, rainy, windy morning!

we ta-bao-ed breakfast from mac

12.00pm - checked-out of dorsett olympic hotel

1.15pm - boarded coach to airport

as we were quite early,
(there was an hour's delay to our flight due to bad weather in the morning)
we had time to have some desserts at the well-known-for-its-mango 许留山 (xu liu shan)! wootx.
its mango is REALLY fresh! =P

4.50pm - boarded cathay pacific flight CX711 home!

i watched the movie, CJ7 on the plane! hoho.
the dinner provided on the plane was quite good!
chicken with rice, potato salad and...

CHOCOLATE ICE-CREAM! wee!

9.00pm - arrived at changi airport! HOME!

really enjoyed this trip!
covering 2 cities & had so much fun! heex.
juz hooked on travelling
sighx, when will i get to travel again?
dum-dee-dum..

& we were really LUCKY (understatement) during this trip!
on the night before flying off,
i saw on the news, that tyhoon feng shen (that caused so much destruction in philippines) was heading towards taiwan
& most probably hit taiwan on tuesday & wednesday
(on the week that we'll be there)
even on the coach to our hotel at taipei,
the driver was warning us,
to stock up on some instant noodles in our hotel
cos it would be really stormy on this week when typhoon feng shen struck
so sad! (that's what we thought, plans spoilt!)
BUT!
when we woke up on our second day (tuesday),
the sun was shining so brightly!
later we realised that the typhoon had decided to change its route - it hit china instead
(including hong kong)
so the next challenge came
on thursday, juz one day before flying to hong kong,
Qiuyi's sister sms-ed her saying that hong kong was hit by typhoon
we were worried we couldn't tour hong kong as planned!
BUT AGAIN!
when we reached hong kong, the weather was not bad!
it only rained in the evenings
the typhoon had subsided! whew.
are we lucky or what, to escape TWICE! =))

感动了无数网民的一个故事

经过一番努力，人们小心的把挡着她的废墟清理开，在她的身体下面躺着她的孩子，包在一个红色带黄花的小被子里，大概有3、4个月大，因为母亲身体庇护着，他毫发未伤，抱出来的时候，他还安静的睡着，他熟睡的脸让所有在场的人感到很温暖。
　　
随行的医生过来解开被子准备做些检查，发现有一部手机塞在被子里，医生下意识的看了下手机屏幕，发现屏幕上是一条已经写好的短信 "亲爱的宝贝，如果你能活着，一定要记住我爱你"，看惯了生离死别的医生却在这一刻落泪了，手机传递着，每个看到短信的人都落泪了。
　　
可以想像这个年轻的母亲生前用手机无数次呼叫她的亲人来寻求帮助，可是中国移动已经没有了通信的能力，她在最后的时刻写下了这个留给孩子的短信。知道如果手机可以打出去，她是否可以活下来？谁都不能肯定，可是每个人问自己这个问题的时候却又觉得答案是肯定的。

a really, really moving true story..

It was the third day after the quake already.

The rescue workers were still looking for survivors. They knew with each minute passing by, the chance to find someone alive gets slimmer. They were overworked. Since the quake, many of them had been working constantly, without having any good sleep. The roads to these mountainous towns and villages were destroyed by the quake-induced mudslides. They did not have machinery to work with. All they had were shovels and their bare hands.

But they were still looking for survivors.

"Come here, come here! There is a body! " Shouted a rescue worker. His fellow workers rushed to the spot. Under a big chunk of roof was a woman. She was lying with a strange pose - she kneeled on the ground with her upper body stretch forward. Her head was on the ground as well. As if she was praying for her survival.

The nurse in the rescue team struggled to reach her through the debris. It was difficult. There was no space. The woman was not responsive to any call. However, just to make sure, the nurse still tried to test her breath, to see if she was still breathing.

Not really. She was breathless, and her body was cold. She was dead. Praying or not, it did not help. The team moved on. There were other people buried. They could not afford to spend time in retrieving a dead body.

When the team reached the next collapsed building, the captain suddenly ran back to the woman, as if he realized something. When he reached the spot, he lay down, put his head next to the roof, and stretched his arm to touch the space under her abdomen. Once, twice. His forehead was locked, just like he was solving a mystery.

"There is a baby! And he is alive!!!" He cried out to his team members.

It was a newly-born. He was neatly wrapped in a red blanket decorated by yellow flowers. Miraculously, he did not even have a scratch in his body. When he was taken out from the rubble, he was sleeping, peacefully sleeping.

The nurse took the baby from the rescue worker and started doing routine exams. When she unwrapped the blanket, she found a cell phone tucked between the baby and his diaper. It had a text message written on the screen, read

"My dear baby, if you can survive, please remember mom loves you."

(my sister brought it there since i wasn't collecting from her in the morning)
we love patronising a bubble tea hut at bugis junction

there was a health & wellness talk by the chiropractic clinic
it is regarding our posture & any misalignment in the spine will lead to pain & discomfort
we then had a free spinal screening,
to see if there is any slight misalignment

my screening results!

today is the day for a new PC to be installed! woohoo.
but i had a hard time transferring my files to another location,
so that they can be transferred to the new PC once installed
whew.
but cool, the new PC is flat-screen, much more disk space & faster speed! =)
the screen is a little too huge though (still trying to get used to it),
& the mouse is big!

i totally enjoyed today's dinner & dance!
it's fabulous, & i muz give credits to the host - Jimmy!
he was dressed like a transvestite at the beginning (rather ewks),
but after some time, "he" seemed really charming
he's damn hilarious, all his crappy rubbish that involved quite abit of sexual references, haha.
& all his games!
all of us almost died laughing & rolling on the floor
he really did a very good job in involving everyone in the ballroom,
& got everyone's attention

congrats to Bec, who won the TOP PRIZE ($800 SA tour voucher) in the lucky draw!
woohoo.
i didn't win anything from the lucky draw,
however, i won some cash in a horse-racing game
4 of us shared & betted on all 3 horses,
so whichever horse won, we would still have a chance of winning!
so eventually, the blue horse won,
& among those who betted on the guy (=blue horse),
the host picked out 2 betters - & one of them was me!!! hoho.
i split the cash with another lady,
each of us had $160!!! woohoo.
then i split among the other 3 friends (Bec, Krista, Wei Leng),
each of us could still bring home $40 cold, hard cash! wahaha. =D
i especially love the door gift too - a set of mini mahjong!
so cute! heex.

after the dinner & dance,
we went down to meet Qiuyi & Cecilia, who were waiting for us to end
we then took a bus to clarke quay,
where we had drinks at cafe iguana
earlier, i already had 2 glasses of white wine during D&D,
& now, besides having my own grant cowboy drink,
i finished some of the others' too
was i drunk? they said i was,
but i felt more like sleeping
Krista then took a cab home,
while the rest of us went to mac to have some snacks
i was practically sleeping in mac, oops. =xX

大年初一!
it's the year of the RAT (my year!),
which means, i've lived through 两轮 already! oh man~
getting so old, zzz.
the rat also 犯太岁 this year,
so i had to go through some procedures at the temple
to ask for a good & smooth year ahead

those who "fan tai sui" typically have a not-so-smooth year, i.e. all your health, career, love life, etc will be affected. there are many tips and tricks where you can appease Tai Sui, thus the commonly said "an tai sui" (安太岁).

i am juz beginning to understand all these..

the first day of the new year is typically visiting temples & the relatives on my father's side
i was still the driver! heex.
i love driving though there are frustrations sometimes

my cousins have all grown! (DUH.)
the sad thing is, we hardly talk anymore
but we still moved from house-to-house together
we watched half of a horror movie - wrong turn II: dead end at my house
human-eating scenes, oh yikes.

AMY'S BLESSING WEDDING CEREMONY + SHARON'S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION!

it was a day with 2 major events - Amy's blessing wedding ceremony + Sharon's birthday celebration!
hohoho.
happy occasions~ =)

took a train to paya lebar with Krista, Simin, Simin's baby (Alyx) & Bec
then tranferred to a cab to the church, trinity @ paya lebar
where the blessing ceremony was held

it was my first time attending a church wedding
so it was quite an experience
listening to the church songs
& the pastor's prayers to the couple =)

then took a bus to his house to start our cooking session!

- marinated pork chops
- yong tau foo soup
quite a sumptuous dinner har! =P

20 jan, sun
went jogging at jurong west sports complex near Bec's new house
together with Bec & Qiuyi
we then went to a fitness corner nearby,
did a little workout & spotted a few kids playing badminton, hoho.
i went to ask if i could play with them, wahaha. =P
one boy was in primary school,
& his brother was sec 1, hoho.
there was another little girl too, who was their neighbour
it was rather fun playing with kids (more kids came), haha.
finding our childhood?

nua-ed at Bec's new house till the afternoon, then went home
hoho.

there was a major disruption to the train service in the morning!
i was jam-packed into the trains & on the jurong east platform
only managed to squeeze onto a train after 4 FULL trains!
whew.

it's the last episode of my favourite tv drama - 黄金路 (the golden path)!
& the ending was kidda dumb

we had craved for it since last thur, when we saw a couple having it after our badminton game, hoho!
but the fish head was rather small,

got a guess bag for my mum (her birthday's tomorrow!)
& also got myself a small one as well, hoho. nice!

TEAM-BUILDING @ SENTOSA

the day was bright & sunny!
J.D. Power had a team-building event by the everest motivation team at sentosa!
woohoo. how cool is that! =D
the weather was great, the location was great, the people were great as well!
anticipating the fun that was about to come..

we arrived at a room (seemed like a container room beside a hut) at sijori resort
very remote place!
we settled in, & sat down for the briefing by David Tan, our main facilitator
he's not at all unfamiliar to us
we had him in our previous team-building in 2006 too,
& he was one of those who conquered mount everest!

everyone was attentive!

the familiar full-value contract!

BACKSTABBERS
we then went outdoors! YEAH!
there was a warm-up game called backstabbers,
where we were given some clothes pegs
& we had to go around planting the pegs on someone else's back
it was madness, haha!
everyone was running around like crazy,
grabbing someone's tee & planting the peg
the aim was to get rid of as many clothes pegs as possible
haha!
i guess this really warmed us up,
with all the laughing & running =P

we were then split into 3 big teams
& went to our respective stations for our games

CREVASSE CROSSING
the first game my team played was - crevasse crossing
we had to cross the imaginary crevasse (a deep cleft in glacial ice) using a rope that was IN THE MIDDLE
we couldn't reach for the rope
so the first task was trying to get the rope to our reach
we managed to get it using a belt (Mo's!), 2 handkerchieves (Mo's as well!) & a cap (Amit's!)
each of us then took turns to swing over to the yellow mat (which was the safe area after the crevasse)
there was also a bucket of water (our "customer's data") to be brought over as well,
& i brought it over when it was my turn
time was up, & we still had 2 team members who had not crossed over,
cos they were supporting us when we swung over
lessons learnt::
- to keep track of time (no one knew how much we had left, except the facilitator himself)
- planning is very important
- keeping our "customer's data" safe at all times

the crevasse crossing!

MOHAWK WALK
the next game was - tension traverse aka mohawk walk
we had to walk on a very fine line from one pole to another,
& there were 3 segments altogether
Anthony is a dancer, so he had the best balancing skill among us!
he could walk across without anyone's help, wow.
the rest of us needed the help of 2 anchors (one at each end)
we held on to one hand from one pole, then reached for the hand of another anchor
there would be 2 people (called 'spotters') in front & behind the person who was walking across
as they would have to support this person in case he falls forward or backwards
lessons learnt::
- support for one another
- trust for your team members
- confidence in yourself that you can do it!

TEA-TIME
we then had a short break,
where we had little cakes & some food before we continued

RIDING THE BUS
the third game my team played was - balancing platform aka riding the bus
in this game (which i personally found was the simplest so far), we had to step onto a large platform, which acted like a big see-saw
we had to spread our people out & try to make this platform be balanced,
meaning, both ends off the ground
we had to hold at this position for 20 seconds, without a moment of unbalance at all
we were split into 2 smaller teams,
& my team managed to do it rather quickly
we then watched the next team & observed their behaviours
it was interesting to watch,
as there would be false accusations going around
someone accusing someone else of moving (causing the imbalance), when in fact he wasn't
we then did the task together as one full team & we succeeded! =)
lessons learnt::
- try not to make false accusations without actually SEEING it
- a need for clear and direct instructions from one source (the appointed leader)

balance balance!

LOW WALL
after completing the 3 games,
all of us gathered again for low wall!
this is very much a game based on TRUST
there were 3 levels in this game
the first level was played between 2 people - one being the 'faller', the other the 'catcher'
the faller would stand in front of the catcher (back facing the catcher)
& after a few commands, the faller would then fall backwards (his body as straight and solid as a wooden block)
& the catcher would support the faller's body by placing his palms up,
then slowly raise the body back upright

the next level was between 3 people,
there would be 2 catchers now, with one faller in the middle
so the only difference was, now the faller wouldn't be back upright after falling backwards,
he would be pushed forward, thus falling forward towards the other catcher
(you get the idea!)
all this while, the faller would be relaxed, not exerting any force at all

the third level was between a group of 8
woah.
this time, the faller would be falling in ANY direction,
& catchers would be around him,
supporting then pushing him away, haha!
i felt as if i was in a washing machine,
tumbling all over with my eyes closed!
FUN!
lessons learnt::
- the importance of trust
- confidence

falling backwards..

TRUST FALL
this was the advanced level of low wall
where we had to fall backwards from an elevated platform
onto a mat that would be held on by our fellow teammates
we had to fall with our body straight & solid
you could see the lack of trust that faller had,
if he stuck his butt out and bent his body when falling,
cos he was trying to minimize the impact,
but actually that would be more dangerous
it was great fun
& we learnt the importance of trust! =)

the TRUST falls!

LUNCH
it was lunchtime! we were all perspiring under the scorching sun
whew.
a break in the air-conditioned room!

BALL THROW
right after lunch, we settled in the room
& Loic was chosen to play the next game
he sat ona chair, back facing a box that was a distance away
he had throw a ball backwards, trying to get it into the box without looking
we would try to be his eyes, telling him to adjust his throwing force and direction
& finally he succeeded! cheers! =)
lessons learnt::
- encouragement for one another
- positive reactions to ANY outcome

PERFECT WORLD
this was an indoor activity
we were grouped, then brainstormed on ideas that would make our working place THE perfect world
it seemed like compiling our wishlists? hoho.
each group then sent a presenter up to tell the rest what we had come up with
& what was the one thing was common?
BONUS!!!
we wanted transparency in bonus' matters, etc.
hoho.
(this was especially close to the heart since all of us would only be receiving our bonus at the end of quarter 1, boohoo!)

it would be interesting to see how some of these would be IMPLEMENTED..

this muz have been my FAVOURITE activity!
out in the sea, under the sun, WOOHOO.

we were briefed on our task, our resources, etc.
we had build a raft (DUH.), row across to the opposite shore, & row back!

we had build a raft which we thought would be SO good,
(there were limited resources, and all teams were fighting for them!)

& since the prices seemed reasonable, we gave it a try

the bill took long to come as well,
& the change never came,
till Krista approached the cashier herself

Bec then brought us to a hairdresser who stayed in cck
& all of us had a haircut! hoho.
we then went IMM, together with Bec's mum too
fox sales! hoho.

juz a convenient excuse to (try to) make new resolutions
hoho.
i'm still making them anyway

2008 resolutions
1. save at least $150 every month
(the toughest resolution, but most important!)
by spending a maximum of $182 every week, i will be able to hit this target. hopefully my bonus (in april most probably) will be of a SUBSTANTIAL amount please! it will be of a great help to my travel plans this year. & HOPEFULLY, i will get an increment around april too, will that happen? muz eat out less, home-cooked food is healthy & FREE! the hike in cab fares is scary too, avoid taking cabs!!!

2. shed the fats!!! slim down to at least xx kg!
yes yes, all my money spent on food & all the food became fats in me, DUH. so let's cut down on fast food especially, less of milk tea, less of cakes & ice-cream, less of fried & oily stuff. eat more vege & fruits! keep a food journal? maybe! (but there's already so many things to keep track of!) exercise more la! (refer to the next resolution!)

3. jog at least 3 times a week, each around 15~20mins!
this is in conjunction with resolution no.2. the only time i can jog is weekdays evenings (if i don't go out after work) & weekends! hopefully i can achieve this target? join more mass runs! but my limit is still 10km. anything beyond is madness!

4. sleep by 1230am every night!
this is not easy too, as i love staying up till 1 to 2am doing don't-know-what. ha! it's gonna take quite a bit of effort, hmmx.

5. improve communication skills!
this will be of a great help at work especially. but how? i guess it's an ongoing learning process. learn from others, learn from my own experiences. a conscious effort to make it work!

ok that's all for now, 5 resolutions may be more than possible to keep to! wishing everyone a great year ahead! hurray! =)

BYE 2007!

it was half-day at work today
since it's the last day of 2007! woohoo.

it's my first time being the primary auditor for an internal audit!
hoho.
was rather stressed about it,
cos i had to prepare what to ask! zzz.
on the whole, i hope i've done quite well? heex.
within my expectations =)

went for a late lunch at pasta mania @ cineleisure
with Bec, Qiuyi, Cecilia

traffic lights! red, ~~amber~~ yellow, green! hoho.

we then went ktv! hoho.
love it when we get a BIG room for juz a few of us
haha~

RUN RUN RUN! - the most significant change this year, as compared to the past years, is the number of mass runs i've participated! i've joined a total of 6 runs::
1. Women's Outdoor Challenge @ ECP - 5km (17 Mar)
2. Anlene Orchard Mile @ Orchard Rd - 1.6km (10 Jun)
3. Milkrun @ Zoukparade - 4km (1 Jul)
4. Passion Run @ ECP - 10km (8 Jul)
5. Great Eastern Run @ Esplanade - 5km (21 Oct)
6. Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon @ Esplanade - 10km (2 Dec)
woohoo. amazing!!! more to come in 2008! =)

WORK IT OUT! - besides running so much, i had some workouts this year too. In february this year, i had a try at a professional gym, planet fitness @ vivocity! attended its body combat & cycling classes, goodness, so exhausting! went to the gym at my office building with my colleagues for a few times too & went to the gym at Wei Leng's condo at the gardens once! joined the heartstrings walk @ the esplanade - a really SHORT walk, haha! had a workout session during the amore women's day out event too. and recently, we had a fire drill, which involved us walking more than 2000 steps (44 levels) down! i call that a workout too. had many badminton sessions too! enjoyable~

YUMMIES! - then why am i still putting on so much weight despite the above 2 points? cos i ate as much as i worked out, OOPS! had 3 crabs-eating sessions at amk this year - expensive yet very delicious! took leave to have a lunch buffet at the line @ shangri-la hotel! woohoo. dined at carnivore @ chijmes too, a damn meaty meal! gosh. & the no.1 killer - the uncountable number of STEAMBOATS i've eaten this year! AHHHH. no wonder.

AWAY FROM SINGAPORE! - the best part about this year, is the number of trips i've made! a big hole in my pocket, yes, but i really enjoyed myself totally! heex. from 14 may to 23 may, i was away in taiwan! it was a GREAT trip exploring taipei & hualien. missing it so much now, wanna go back there soon! on 14 jul, i went on a one-day trip to batam for cable-skiing! it was really tiring but i really enjoy watersports! had 2 weekend getaways with my colleagues:: to genting (28 sep to 30 sep) and to bintan (24 nov to 25 nov)! i thought genting was already very enjoyable & fun (cos of the amusement rides we took!), but the trip to bintan proved to be even better (though shorter)! wahaha. our villa was perfect, the sandy white beach was perfect, the weather was perfect, the people were perfect! i wish i never have to come back~ definitely more getaways next year!

AIRPORT! - what is this about? haha. besides flying to taiwan, i visited the airport for many other reasons this year too! on 31 jan, i took leave to send Cathy & Kelly off, our china collgeaues who were here for training, back to china. wonder when will i see them again! on 27 may, after returning from taiwan, i asked Wee Perng to help in the picking up of Rebecca, her mum & Qiuyi, who were returning from their hongkong trip. on 21 june, went to pick Yih Hong up, who juz came back from australia, lucky boy! and on 19 july, went to send Wei Wei & Keith off, as they were going shanghai! so that's 4 trips to the airport! woohoo.

BOARDGAMES MADNESS! - visited the settlers' cafe three times and once to the mind cafe this year. always enjoyed myself at these boardgames cafe with a bunch of friends, hoho. always having a hilarious time!

MAHJONG! PONG! - this year i picked up mahjong! hoho. had overnight mahjong sessions for quite many times! twice at Pei Chin's house, once at Qiuyi's, once at Frank's, and 3 times at Krista's house! woah. i hope i'm getting better at it? (at the same time, addicted?)

SCRAPBOOKING FUN! - did 2 scrapbooks as birthday gifts twice this year! the first was with Vivi, which we did one in one evening for Seok Chuan, really love the final product! the next was with Qiuyi, which we did overnight for Rebecca, hoho! kidda enjoy all the cutting & pasting!

I'VE WON! - the prizes i've won this year, a JJ Lin autographed poster from mediacorp cos i wrote in a little story, hoho, but i didn't collect the prize! oops. a bottle of heliocare from the anlene orchard mile event, a trip to phuket from jetstar, cos i posted a photo of us in taiwan with the best starjump! hoho. & lastly, a pair of cable-ski passes from cleo. i collected the passes, but they expired in juz a few days' time, duh.

WEDDINGS! - attended my cousin, Xue Na's little wedding ceremony, and also a colleague, Alan's wedding this year! more to come in 2008?

HAPPY BIRTHDAYS! - many birthday parties this year! woohoo. my sister turned 21 this year, all grown-up now! & she's already managing the many soup spoon stores, recently a new outlet opened at bugis junction! many old friends, Frederick, Liping, Seok Chuan, Angela all turned 21 too! (i have so many young friends huh). also attended some babies' 1 month celebrations - Yvonne's baby boy & Andrew's baby girl! =)

THE ARTS! - surprisingly, watched some concerts and plays this year! intempo 2007 by the NUS wind symphony, emerge 2007 - love.hate, a play by the CAC voices (starring Amanda!), the phantom of the opera musical, an evening with friends, a choir concert by ACJC & lastly, rhymonia IX, a harmonica concert by ngee ann poly. not bad huh?

FALLS! - it's funny i'm keeping a record of this! haha. but strangely, i kept falling down this year, hmmx. on 6 apr, i had a minor fall at east coast park while cycling with Angela. a little girl suddenly turned into my path, making me fall from my bicycle, but there were no injuries! whew. but i wasn't so lucky the next time. on 6 oct, again at east coast park cycling with Rebecca & Qiuyi, i had quite a bad fall while making a turn. my turn was too wide, and i was off-balance. oops. then finally, on 16 nov (this is ridiculous), i fell down while walking back to office after lunch! the ground went in without me noticing, so i fell face-flat on the ground, oh man~ hope i'll get luckier in 2008!

JOBS! - some notes about work! my office had shifted to tanjong pagar ever since 15 jan this year. getting used to this new environment! on 3 dec, i was officially certified to be an internal auditor for my company (more work? ya.) regarding my part-time job at spageddies, i was asked to go to spageddies @ marina square to help out for 2 shifts. didn't really like the working environment there! well anyway, i have kidda stopped working at the one at paragon ever since 9 dec, it's been 2 years & 4 days working there! & this ends my 5 years in the F&B service industry. it's been a memorable experience, ups & downs, valuable lessons~ =)

BIG NEWS! - some big news around us~ on 6 mar, there was an earthquake at indonesia, 11 mar - a murder took place at soup spoon @ raffles city shopping centre (scary!), 2 apr - tsunami at the solomon islands, 16 apr - the virginia tech shooting (OMG.), 25 may - a water spout was spotted from my office, 12 sep - earthquakes at sumatra, & the most recent incident on 25 nov - the cambodia dragonboat accident. so many of these are unfortunate and sad incidents, sighx. will 2008 be better?

we walked down 44 flights of stairs (OMG.)
it was easier than expected

so for the past 2 months,
we showered our mortals with lots of love & gifts
the pantry was the shared area to place all our gifts secretly,
& we even had a tagboard to post our messages!
it livened up the atmosphere in the office quite abit,
especially when it's getting nearer to this day! woohoo.

it's a christmas dinner at sizzler @ suntec city
we also had a theme - BLING BLING!
you could see MOST of us wearing bling bling tops, carrying bling bling items, wahaha.
KT was the most classic!
he didn't seem to have any bling bling items when we saw him in office
then during the dinner,
he fished out a SUPER-bling tag which he wore around his neck
hahaha. hilarious.
Gokul, Andrew & Xiao Lei didn't follow the theme tonight,
so they had to be forfeited!
they had to eat some of the world's worst combination of food from the salad bar + ice-cream
oh YUCKS.
but they were really sporting! hoho.

Bec did this twirling of the ice-cream & she felt it was very nice, ermx. haha! =P

we revealed who our mortals were,
& gave our gifts to our mortals!
my angel was Cui Fang - wah, silently siah!
i've never expected it was her!
& i'm glad my mortal, Chuan Hui, was happy with her gift! heex.

the standard chartered runpix analysis is out!
my results::

i took 1hr 32mins 47secs to complete the run
(the event average was 1hr 29mins 7secs!)
my average speed was 6.5km/h
aim to do better NEXT YEAR! =)

thought i wanted to control my diet?
but i still ended up eating a huge mcspicy burger for dinner
gosh.

STANDARD CHARTERED SINGAPORE MARATHON - 10KM RUN!

woohoo.
i was at the start-line at 745am
& i was actually doing this alone
oh well~
8am:: flag-off!
it's a much realistic task this year,
the half-marathon last year was a killer,
did the right thing this year by signing up for the 10km run instead
haha.
at least it's achievable (without almost dropping dead)
=)
0km ~ 3km:: this has always been the toughest, cos my body hasn't gotton used to the momentum yet!
4km ~ 6km:: this was rather painless, haha. cool~
7km ~ 9km:: oh man, i almost wanted to walk during this stretch, but i juz continued jogging, really slowly! haha oops. tough.
for the last kilometre,
it was more of excitement,
cos i was about to finish! YEAH!
& there were more & more runspirators along the roads
hoho.
i completed in about 1.5hr!
hoho. within expectations! =)
saw some really creative 'your reason to run' tags at the back of some runners
"i don't want to be a marathon virgin!"
LOL~
& there were some messages dedicated to the 5 fine young men in the unfortunate dragonboat accident
this run will be the LAST for this year
hoho.
did so many runs this year
& they had all been a great experience! heex.
this is also the running event with the BIGGEST scale - with 40,000 participants this year!
wow.

went jurong point to make the lenses for our new frames!

bought those frames at bintan, hoho.
to be collected this friday!
then i can start wearing my new glasses! heex.

gave her the gifts after lunch,

she was so pleasantly surprised

i had a meeting at starbucks downstairs!
so cool!!
& i managed to pay attention throughout
it was actually an ISO training session for us internal auditors

tried our luck & we managed to get our glasses today!

BINTAN TRIP!!!

this has gotta be one of the MOST-FUN getaways ever!!!
the weather during this weekend there was FREAKING GOOD
the sun was blazing-hot for both days! wootx.

DAY 01 ~ 24 NOV (SAT)
boarded the ferry at tanah merah at 1105h on sat
we had breakfast at the terminal before boarding, yumx.

it was an hour's ride over to the resort
we rested & reserved energy for the day, hoho.

the weather was SHIOK la!

there was a shuttlebus that fetched us from the terminal to our resort - nirwana gardens
we were lucky!
we could check-in earlier than the expected time =)
Krista had paid for this villa - banyu biru villa
it's a 2-storey bungalow! woohoo.

it's a really comfortable place
a big living room + dining area
then there were 2 bedrooms, wootx.
after doing some unpacking,
we changed into the clothes for water activities! hoho.

we started with taking a ride on the banana boat!
it looked more like a pencil than a banana, oops.
i took the first seat,
followed by Rebecca, Qiuyi, Krista
we were pulled by a powerboat in the sea
& we had to hold on to a handle in front
it was a short 10-min ride,
but it was super FUN!!!
i nearly slipped off initially,
but got used to the force after a while,
the 4 of us held on & die-die didn't wanna fall into the sea, wahaha! =P
no matter how the powerboat turned & sped,
we were hanging on tight! hoho.
it was only towards the end,
when we were going back to shore,
when Bec pushed me down into the sea, haha!
Krista fell off too, hoho.
LOVE IT! =)

we then had a light lunch at a cafe along the beach
before going out to the sun to play on the white sandy beach! hoho.

we also went into the sea &
kept getting slapped in the face by the currents
haha. =P
the water was so clear,
the sand was so soft!

we played till 4pm+,
then went back to our villa to wash-up
we had to catch the bus to pasar oleh-oleh! =)

we first settled at cafe helo helo for dinner!
it was juz like singapore's zi char,
but tastier + cheaper! heex.
we had fried chicken wings, seafood toufu, one HUGE plate of kangkong, fried calamari, nestle prawns, etc.
YUMX!
it was an al-fresco dining area,
we were eating under the full moon!
woohoo. =)

after dinner,
we shopped around the pasar,
especially at the polo ralph store!
there was a 50% for citibank cardholders on all items! wow.
i bought a pink polo tee! hoho.

DAY 02 ~ 25 NOV (SUN)
the purpose of this getaway was to celebrate Krista's upcoming birthday
so we've ordered a chocolate cake from the resort
to be delivered to our villa this morning
Krista, Rebecca, Qiuyi were out to the swimming pool in the morning,
Pei Chin & i brought the cake out to the pool,
wanting to give Krista a surprise
the wind was juz too strong to light the candle,
so we gave up in the end, haha.
Bec & Qiuyi were busy distracting Krista,
who was lying on the beach chair
lalala~ success! =)

we then went to have the breakfast buffet
(we had 4 complimentary coupons!)

we arrived at singapore at around 6pm
went jurong entertainment centre for dinner at mac!
hoho.
i love this getaway!!!

which was juz nearby
my sister was working! hoho.

it was a HEAVY dinner at carnivore @ chijmes
OMG.
we had so much chicken, lamb, beef, fish, pork!
it was Bec's birthday this weekend,
so Krista wanted to give her a big dinner treat! hoho.
it was quite cool,
the chefs would be going around with different cuts of meats,
then slicing on the spot onto our plates if we requested to have it
woohoo.
but towards the end of the meal,
i was almost puking,
& i think i could stay away from this place for at least the next half a year
haha.

we then went to pan-pacific hotel
to meet up with Qiuyi,
who was having her company's dinner & dance!
they had a theme - uniforms! so cool.
her team came up with the pirates theme
wahaha.

spent the afternoon shopping in town with Qiuyi
bought many scrapbook materials, & some other stuff!

we then took a cab to her house,

it was so much cutting, pasting, decorating, heex!
did so many scrapbooks this year for friends, haha

we even went to give the birthday girl, Bec a surprise at MIDNIGHT!
we lighted the candles on a small cake,
then waited downstairs
since she's staying on the second level,
Qiuyi called her & asked her to look at the full moon tonight, haha
Bec then saw us! wahaha.

before taking a cab home to take a shower
